This is the start of a tattoo design for my friend Kate
It's a sturgeon, to go on her thigh.
It's generic sturgeon, mainly based off the shovel head and short nose varieties. It's basically the best parts from the different types all in one.
It'll end up being lovely browns with a sort of golden quality to the whole thing with subtle dark blue stormy waves around it.
I'm pretty proud of this for being my first real attempt at a fish, and I'm pretty proud of Kate and myself for making this into such an awesome thing.
General public, what do you think?
EDIT: I've posted the latest version. I traced it onto a different sheet of paper so I could draw on the tail tip, but I didn't draw on the tail tip because it's giving me some troubles. With the help of Dustin and a book I added some waves. They're giving me difficulty, as are the spikes/diamonds on the back and sides. Have to get em all three d and what not god damn it.
The old diamondback sturgeon came swimmin' along
Minding his business one day
Rooting and sniffing and urging to spawn
In the mud flats of san pablo bay
A scent came around so he followed his snout
He found what was to his surprise
A golden morsel, a tidbit, a tight bunch of grass shrimp
Was there right before this buck's eyes
He circle round twice and he took a big whiff
Then sucked up this savory meal
Then came a jolt and to the diamondback's surprise
Through his lips cut the cold, barbed steel
In a panic the old diamondback sped to the north
He sped to the east, west and south
But the harder he swam, he still could not break free
From the "tugging" that pulled at his mouth
The old diamondback sturgeon came swimmin' along
Minding his business one day

this looks like it would make an amazing tattoo. i love the curve of the body, and the way you followed the line of its back.
i also definitely love the golds/browns colour idea. :> i want to see it on skin!
I was so overcome by the hilarity of the first part of that comment I totally didn't even see the second half at first.
I'm super psyched for it to be on skin, it'll be an expensive endeavor (on her part!) but definitely worth it. This is one of my favorite drawings I've ever done, for sure.
